Privacy Policy

1. What We Collect

VoiceType collects minimal data to function. Here is exactly what is stored and where:

• Dictation history — stored locally in your browser via chrome.storage.local. Never sent to any server. Limited to the last 50 entries.
• Extension settings — stored locally in your browser via chrome.storage.sync (synced across your Chrome devices via your Google account, not our servers).
• Microphone audio — processed entirely by the browser's built-in Web Speech API. Audio is not recorded, stored, or sent to VoiceType servers.

2. Microphone Access

VoiceType requests microphone access solely to enable speech recognition. The microphone is only activated when you explicitly toggle listening (via the mic button or Alt+S shortcut). We do not record audio in the background.

Speech recognition is handled by the browser's native Web Speech API (powered by Google's speech recognition service in Chrome). Please refer to Google's privacy policy for details on how Chrome handles audio during speech recognition.

3. AI Auto-Punctuation

When AI auto-punctuation is enabled, the text transcript of your speech is sent to the Anthropic API for punctuation correction. This means:

• Only the text transcript (not audio) is sent
• Requests are made over HTTPS
• No personally identifiable information is attached to these requests
• Anthropic's data handling is governed by Anthropic's Privacy Policy

You can disable AI auto-punctuation in Settings at any time if you prefer fully local processing.

4. What We Do NOT Collect

• We do not collect your name, email, or any account information
• We do not track which websites you visit
• We do not use analytics or tracking pixels
• We do not sell data to advertisers or third parties
• We do not store data on external servers

5. Permissions Explained

• activeTab — required to inject the mic button and speech-to-text functionality into the current tab
• storage — required to save your settings and dictation history locally
• host_permissions (<all_urls>) — required so VoiceType works on any website, not just a predefined list
• Microphone — required for speech recognition (you are prompted to grant this by your browser)

6. Children's Privacy

VoiceType is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children.

7. Changes to This Policy

If we make material changes to this policy, we will update the "Last updated" date above and may notify users via the extension update notes.
